EIZO Unveils 23-Inch Naked-Eye 3D Monitor With Full HD Resolution
Eizo Nanao Corporation (TSE: 6737) today announced the DuraVision FDF2301-3D, a 23-inch monitor for the industrial market which displays stereoscopic images. The DuraVision FDF2301-3D uses a directional backlight developed by EIZO that enables high-definition display. It will be the world’s first naked-eye 3D desktop monitor available in the 23-inch size and at full high definition (1920 x 1080 resolution).
The development of the DuraVision FDF2301-3D was conducted in conjunction with the Japan Science and Technology (JST) Agency’s public initiative to promote cooperation between academia and industry. It was part of a “Real Time Stereo SEM Development” that was selected within a prototype validation/practical realization program.
The real time stereo SEM (scanning electron microscope) theme of this program solves shortcomings of previous naked-eye 3D color LCD monitors by realizing high-definition display and high depth resolution.
The directional backlight used in the DuraVision FDF2301-3D produces 3D graphics by displaying the parallax images that make up the naked-eye 3D images from the same pixel in a time lag. Because there is no need to allocate a pixel from the LCD panel to each parallax image, the monitor can use the LCD panel’s full HD resolution to produce realistic stereoscopic images with excellent depth resolution.
Furthermore, because the direction of the parallax image that reaches the viewer’s left and right eyes is determined by the LED light source of the LCD monitor, the moiré and color stripes that occur by using a parallax barrier or lenticular lens as with other naked-eye 3D technologies are not an issue. In principle, the viewer can see stable high-definition 3D images to the perimeter of the screen because there is no occurrence of pseudoscopic images where an image displayed at a fixed angle inverts.
EIZO anticipates the DuraVision FDF2301-3D will be used with SEMs (scanning electron microscopes) and semiconductor inspection equipment in academic institutions and in the private sector.
Availability
The DuraVision FDF2301-3D is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2011. Date of availability and pricing will vary by country so please contact the EIZO subsidiary or distributor in your country for details.
