Radiant Images Debuts its Novo Compact Digital Cinema Camera
Attendees can get hands-on demonstration of palm-sized Novo and try new accessories at P+S Technik Booth C8240
The Novo, a newly released digital cinema camera that removes the cinematic limitations of the GoPro Hero3 for professional filmmakers, will make its debut at NAB Show April 8-11 in Las Vegas.
Attendees who visit the P+S Technik Booth C8240 can get hands-on demonstrations and discuss key features and capabilities of the palm-sized Novo with technicians from Radiant Images, an L.A.-based rental house and digital cinema innovator.
Radiant Images collaborated on the design and function of the Novo with creator View Factor Studios. The Novo is available for rent only, exclusively at Radiant Images in the U.S. and through its rental partner in Europe, P+S Technik.
The Novo is viewed as an ideal solution for cinematographers who are enamored with the capabilities of the new GoPro Hero3 but held back by the Hero3’s cinematic limitations.
Key features of the Novo include a C-mount lens system plus a PL mount adapter, back focus adjustment, and exposure control capabilities that open up a wide-range of artistic possibilities for cinematographers and camera operators. The auto exposure function standard with the GoPro can be disabled on the Novo, permitting cinematographers to use the lens to manually adjust the aperture.
“There’s a lot of curiosity about the Novo, so we are looking forward to its official debut at NAB and the opportunity for filmmakers to touch and feel and operate this camera and discover how versatile it is,” said Michael Mansouri, co-founder of Radiant Images. “Our goal is to help cinematographers achieve their vision without compromise. The Novo is an important new tool for that purpose.”
In addition to showcasing the Novo, Radiant Images also will unveil brand-new accessories available for the camera, including a wireless follow-focus system and a wireless video solution, he added.
The tiny camera was released in late February, but already is making a big impact. Radiant Images is supplying the Novo to Cinematographer Shane Hurlbut on the set of DreamWorks’ highly-anticipated racing video-game adaptation Need For Speed, scheduled for release next March.
The Novo’s lightweight aluminum housing is 20 percent thinner than the GoPro Hero3, fits into the palm of a hand, and includes three bottom and two front 1/4-20 mounting points. Also, four buttons on the front (REC, PWR, WiFi & AUX) are assignable to several functions depending on the application. The Aux button turns the auto exposure on/off, but can also be utilized for other functions, such as digital zoom.
The Novo offers these enhanced cinematic features while also retaining the GoPro Hero3: Black Edition’s key functionality and accessories, such as the LCD touch screen, power backpack and WiFi connectivity for wireless camera control. Like the GoPro, the Novo shoots cinema-quality 2K and 4K resolution.
Mansouri and his Radiant Images team – Syrous Nabatian, General Manager; Nick Lantz, Head of Technical Services; and Sinclair Fleming, Radiant’s in-house engineer – will be on hand at the P+S Technik booth (#C8240) throughout the day, Monday through Thursday.
