Rorke Data’s Galaxy Aurora Storage Solution, Combined with HyperFS File Management and Adobe’s SpeedGrade CS6, Used in Industry-Leading 3D Conversion of Blockbuster Films
Rorke Data, an Avnet Company (NYSE: AVT) and data storage solutions provider, today announced it has teamed up with Legend3D, a leading digital media technology and visual effects company and innovator in 3D storytelling, to create and deploy a cost-effective and highly efficient file management system along with a suite of finishing tools for storing large 2D-to-3D conversion data files. The strategic partnership implements a data management system capable of hosting data files generated by Legend3D’s conversion work on leading Hollywood films–such as Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Hugo and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The system features Rorke Data’s HyperFS file system and Rorke Data Galaxy® Aurora SAN appliances, as well as Adobe® and Key Code Media technologies, for a state-of-the-art solution.
“At Legend3D, we’ve dedicated a significant portion of our R&D efforts and manpower to developing progressive, business efficient stereo conversion tools to advance the 3D entertainment industry. The nature of our business requires a depth of storage and immense bandwidth to support a dynamic, content-sharing environment,” said Anthony Lopez, director of Information Technology at Legend3D. “This partnership with Rorke Data has allowed our experienced creative team to streamline operations, further honing our project management process, while working at increased speeds and with greater control.”
The Legend3D, Rorke Data and Key Code teams collaborated to develop an extensive fibre network connected into Rorke Data’s HyperFS file system, allowing Legend3D to have 16 different shot reviews operating simultaneously. The solution includes ten Rorke Data Galaxy Aurora SAN appliances striped into four volumes, ranging from 35 to 55 terabytes each. This solution offers the ability to create massive amounts of throughput in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
“Rorke Data’s Galaxy Aurora is a purpose-built, feature-rich high-performance RAID appliance designed specifically for the media and entertainment market, with an emphasis in film and video post-production,” said Robert Herzan, vice president of sales for Rorke Data’s Media and Entertainment Division. “Combined with HyperFS, our high-performance low-latency file system, Rorke Data’s Galaxy Aurora provides the industry with the enterprise features our customers need without the heavy price tag associated with systems of this caliber. Knowing that our technology supports the production of Academy Award®-winning films, such as this year’s multiple Oscar®-winning film Hugo, is exciting and gives Rorke Data, and our parent company Avnet, a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment.”
Because of the open architecture of Rorke Data’s storage solutions, Legend3D is also able to use Adobe’s new film finishing and color grading application Adobe® SpeedGrade™ CS6.
“Adobe SpeedGrade contains powerful finishing tools to import EDLs from editing applications and then conform, color grade and render out to multiple formats,” said Patrick Palmer, senior product manager at Adobe. “With SpeedGrade, Legend3D can parse and rebuild timelines on the fly, which means they have the ability to build an entire feature at the touch of a button.”
Nancy Wang, managing editor at Legend3D, commented, “SpeedGrade’s timeline-based tool allows the Legend3D stereoscopic visual effects team to split clips, add dissolves and most importantly, color correct with precision to meet clients’ artistic requests and deliver high-quality finished projects.”
“Key Code Media focuses on helping our clients achieve successful outcomes,” said Mike Cavanagh, president, Key Code Media. “The solution we provided highlights both Rorke Data and Legend3D’s focus on delivering high-performance solutions for the media and entertainment industry. Recommending the Galaxy Aurora coupled with HyperFS was an easy call.”
