ONSIGHT provides the stereoscopic 3D post production on ‘Madam Butterfly 3D’, a co-production from RealD and the Royal Opera House, theatrically released worldwide from spring 2012.

ONSIGHT completed the post production on the new ‘Madam Butterfly 3D’, a co-production from RealD and the Royal Opera House and produced by Principal Large Format (PLF). The film is directed for cinema by Julian Napier and opens in the UK on 5 March, followed by a global release, exclusively in RealD-equipped theatres. ONSIGHT’s Lab & Post department supported the vision, which brings this celebrated story to the big screen for the first time in immersive 3D technology.

ONSIGHT offered the production a full S3D service from managing the project’s lab requirements to DI and cinema mastering. As the production was shot natively in 3D with convergence on background, the Lab team backed up and processed the rushes with certain offsets to prepare the files for comfortable offline editing by the film’s director, Julian Napier and co-editor Stroo Olofsson. The work continued with online conforming, encompassing further 3D offsets, alignment checks, colour matching and stereo fixes on multiple in-house SGO Mistikas. As most of the material was recorded on the ARRI ALEXA, the grade allowed ONSIGHT’s Colourist to create the desired filmic look. ONSIGHT also supported the production shoot with Optimo 3D lens systems for the ALEXAs and Sony PMW-F3 cameras for the steadicam. The picture was filmed last summer during live performances at the prestigious Royal Opera House.

This new production stays true to Giacomo Puccini’s tragic love story of ‘Madama Butterfly’, emphasising the emotion through modern digital techniques. Phil Streather, CEO of PLF and Producer of the film says, “The stereoscopic element compliments the powerful arrangement and intimate original stage direction, enhancing the live opera experience to a wider audience. Julian [Napier] did a brilliant job of creating a new art form out of an existing one. ONSIGHT’s award-winning 3D credentials meant the team was a natural choice to provide the high-end finishing we both needed”. ONSIGHT graded the final film in P3 Colour Space, using their recently installed Barco projection and RealD 3D system, which offers the client a true representation of how the film will appear to cinema audiences. The Post team has finished by delivering the DCDMs and master DCPs for international distribution, including reversioning in seven languages.
