DVS’ Spycer Used on First German 3D Animation Film, Animals United
Dream Factory Hanover: The intelligent Content Control System Spycer(r)
from DVS supported the makers of the 3D animation film Animals United as
major element of the 3D workflow: Besides the organization of the clips,
Spycer(r) took care of the defragmentation of the volumes of data.
The first German 3D animation film, Animals United, has
captivated cinema audiences since October 2010. With three-dimensional
images like those from the Hollywood film factories, Constantin Film AG
in co-production with the Hanover-based production company Ambient
Entertainment accomplished Europe-wide pioneering work: Under the
guidance of directors Reinhard Klooss and Holger Tappe, they created
animal screen heroes in the third dimension. Even the software, which
took over the central networking of all systems during the creation of
the 3D adventure, originates from Hanover: Spycer(r) from DVS convinced
the 3D specialists – not only through intuitive user guidance.
The completed film Animals United consists of about 130,000 individual
images for both the left and the right eye, which require approximately
100 TB of storage space. So as not to lose track of the enormous
quantity of digital film data and ensure constant access to the data for
all those involved, Ambient Entertainment decided on a technically as
well as geographically obvious solution: DVS Digital Video Systems AG,
also based in Hanover, provided the fitting Content Control System with
Spycer(r). The company and its products, including Spycer(r), have
already been awarded several prizes from the film world.
As an open system, Spycer(r) can be perfectly integrated into existing
IT infrastructures for file-based workflows. The user-friendly software
accelerates the data flow and allows users to search the entire network
for image data and their metadata. As a result, the entire organization
of film data becomes significantly more transparent and reliable, while
the extensive Spycer(r) feature set enables continuous editing of the
material.
While in Munich large parts of the final film editing took place, among
other things for picture and sound, in Hanover Spycer(r) was used: At
Ambient Entertainment, the DVS software acted as central linking point
for the hardware and software components involved, took over the
clip-related writing of data to the hard disks as well as their
defragmentation. “Besides the enormous hardware involvement, for us
Spycer(r) was absolutely necessary, in order to organize the finish
rendered scenes in 3D,” related Ambient CEO Holger Tappe. “Our system
was only able to manage a data throughput of almost 600 MB per second
thanks to Spycer(r).”
DVS CEO Hans-Ulrich Weidenbruch is pleased about the successful
collaboration and a 3D result to be proud of: “As regards the graphical
realization, Animals United, and with it 3D art from Hanover, is in no
way inferior to the stereoscopic works of Hollywood. With Spycer(r) we
were able to make our contribution towards it.”
