Hello [FIRSTNAME]

It's the morning after the night before in terms of the Oscars, and although it's disappointing that Pina didn't win in the Documentary Feature category, Hugo scooped awards for Art Direction, Cinematography, Visual Effects, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing - which can only be good for the 3D industry as a whole. 3D also played a role at the post-Oscars Governor's Ball in the form of a 3D dessert designed by Wolfgang Puck which recquired guests to don red/cyan glasses!

With less than seven weeks to go before the 2012 NAB Show opens in Las Vegas, news about what will be on display is coming in. If you want a preview, bookmark our 3D @ NAB 2012 Spotlight, as we have a lot to add in the run up to the event. You can apply online now for a pass code that will give you free entry to the exhibition. If you're exhibiting stereo 3D products or services, send us your show news as soon as possible!

Finally, I would like to welcome AJA Video Systems as a new sponsor. We are able to provide free access to 3Droundabout thanks to the support of sponsors and advertisers - so please take a look at what they have to offer. And if you would like to join them, please request our rate card.

We start our articles this month with a piece on how 3D is set to change the advertising industry, by James Stewart of Geneva Film Co. Next is Paola Hobson of Snell, who describes how to do single-channel and two-channel standards conversion using the Snell Alchemist Ph.C-HD. This is followed by a piece on disparity-aware stereo 3D production tools that can operate with some user interaction or even fully automatically, by Aljosa Smolic of Disney Research Zurich.

In his Tales from the 3D Road, Al Caudullo of 3DGuy Productions gives a moving account of the recent floods in Thailand. Next is Steve Shaw of Light Illusion, who serves up the fifth installment of his enlightening series on the basics of shooting S3D. Part 5 looks at the cut-out effect, scene focus and viewing distance - have your red/cyan glasses ready! Finally, Dmitiry Vatolin of YUVsoft, who gives a roundup of the Sixth International Workshop on Video Processing and Quality Metrics for Consumer Electronics. Enjoy!
