emotion3D Unveils Stereoscopic Suite X1 3D Depth Grading Software at NAB 2012
Stand C9508, NAB 2012
New features within the Stereoscopic Suite X1™ (SSX1) empower post-production stereographers to shape films’ emotional narrative with unprecedented accuracy.

“Creative use of depth on a per-scene basis, is where the art of stereoscopic 3D is at”, explains well-known stereographer Clyde DeSouza in the “Emotion Engineering” chapter of his recent book Think in 3D. Matching a carefully-scripted depth narrative to a film’s emotional intensity profile is integral to the new grammar of high-quality 21st century 3D filmmaking. Likewise, respect for the human visual system by introducing sufficient “eye time-out” and avoiding depth jumps at shot boundaries are pre-requisites for creating stimulating and immersive experiences that leave audiences hungry for more, not recoiling with eye-strain.
Depth Editing Tools
Film professionals attending the NAB Show 2012 will be able to witness live demonstrations of emotion3D’s pioneering tools for depth grading, where a single slider enables stereographers to stretch or squash the 3D space (parallax), while another controls the extent of the pop-in/pop-out effect (convergence). “…new camera perspectives are rendered, as though recorded by additional cameras in different positions”, explains Mr Florian Seitner, emotion3D’s Director of Technology. Per-frame depth adjustment enables full control over the 3D volume over the script, while depth dove-tailing at shot boundaries ensures a smooth handover between the end of one shot and the beginning of the next.
Depth Script Visualization
The software automatically generates and depicts the min/max depth values along the timeline. Additional features enable post-producers to visualize from above how a scene will be perceived relative to the screen plane and the recommended pop-out/pop-in limits for the target viewing environment (e.g. IMAX, cinema, home theatre, TV etc) – either selected from the presets or manually as a parallax value. The tools are available as plug-ins for Adobe After Effects and openFX-compatible host applications such as Nuke and Sony Vegas.
Industry Feedback
Satisfied customers are embracing the SSX1 software’s capability to enhance their creative freedom: “The SSX1 represents an essential part of our 3D workflow. Its quality and speed are unsurpassed in the industry, enabling us to deliver top-quality results under tight schedules.” reports Hannes Harder, Head of Digital Production & Lead 3D Artist, United Entertain.
