Quixel Research Finds USA Unit Sales of 3D Home Cinema Projectors Increased 121% from Q2 2011 to Q3 2011
Taking advantage of the obvious “3D cinema experience at home” angle, watching 3D content at home using a front projector took hold in a meaningful way during Q3 2011. Quixel Research’s USA Home Theater and Entertainment Front Projector Market Review for Q3 2011 revealed that USA unit sales of 3D projectors increased 121% from Q2 2011 to Q3 2011 and accounted for over 16% of the total home projection category.
“The immersive nature of front projection is one of the primary reasons consumers install home theaters and is also the primary reason movie goers value 3D movies and entertainment,” stated Tamaryn Pratt, Quixel Research’s principal. “It is one of those proverbial marriage made in heaven stories, so expect to see 3D in more than half of the projectors by this time next year.” Revenues for 3D home projectors grew 14% from Q2 2011 to Q3 2011, or far less significantly than volume for the same time period due to the recent onslaught of low cost 3D models in market.
Overall, the USA Home Theater and Entertainment Front Projector Market saw a dip in volume quarter-toquarter, the category fell 7% from Q2 2011 to Q3 2011 but grew 2% year-to-year. Revenues for the home projection category dropped 4% to $74M in Q3 2011. Annually however, the increased volume of midrange and higher priced products supported a 21% increase in revenues.
