‘Dragonflies & Astronauts’ featuring The Parlotones to be broadcast live from South Africa in 3D
On July 16, 2011, ‘Dragonflies & Astronauts’ featuring The Parlotones, Driven by Volkswagen, in association with 94.7 Highveld Stereo will be broadcast live from The Teatro at Montecasino, Johannesburg, South Africa in 3D. The transmission – a world first – will be beamed via satellite to 3D outlets around the globe.
The world first concept will transform audience expectations of a live show and is the first of numerous creative endeavours between innovative car brand, Volkswagen South Africa and the multi-platinum selling rock band, The Parlotones. Known for breaking creative boundaries with their music videos, marketing strategies and live performances, The Parlotones will set a new standard in live entertainment.
‘Dragonflies & Astronauts’ is a rock theatre production which is being developed complete with storyline, sets and characters revolving around the greatest hits of The Parlotones. International fans will be able to see the live 3D production on various platforms which are currently being negotiated. Eban Olivier and Danie van der Heever of Catalyst Entertainment are the creative minds behind the production. The talented team was responsible for the show design of the ground-breaking ‘Parlotones Live at the Coca Cola Dome’ as well as ‘Sony 3D Worldwide’ – the global launch of Sony’s 3D technology worldwide.
The Parlotones kick off their North American Tour March 3, 2011 in Atlanta, GA, before making their way to Toronto, Ontario for Canadian Music Week performing Thursday, March 10th at the El Mocambo at 10:30pm as part of the Factor Breakthrough Series. Those heading down to SXSW in Austin, TX can catch The Parlotones on March 17 at Gypsy and March 19 at the Dirty Dog Bar. The journey continues west through the U.S. then into Vancouver, B.C. to perform at The Biltmore Cabaret on March 26.
The Parlotones have become a form of South African royalty with their deftly crafted romantic lyrics, atmospheric pop structures, and ambitious live shows. The rock 4-piece achieved multi-platinum status in their home country, selling more records than Coldplay, Oasis, and The Killers combined.
Stardust Galaxies, the bands sixth album and debut North American album contains lyrical insights into the stories, and social and political struggles of their homeland, with a rock, folk, and Doo-Wop backing to each meaningful song. The album won Best Rock Album at the 2010 South African Music Awards while “Push Me To The Floor” won Best Music Video Of The Year.
South Africa Airways has partnered with The Parlotones to not only give away tickets to each show on the upcoming North American Tour, but a chance for one lucky fan to win two tickets to fly to South Africa to see the band do “Dragonflies and Astronauts” live.
