Italy Gets First Terrestrial 3D TV Service
Motive Television PLC (AIM: MTV), the digital television technology, software and services provider, is delighted to announce that it has successfully enabled the broadcasting of 3D television content to a set-top box using its Bestv software over the digital terrestrial television (“DTT”) transmission system.
“I believe this is a world first,” said Giuseppe Flores d’Arcais, Co- Founder of Bestv and Director of Motive; “This latest innovation, 3-D on terrestrial television, using our Bestv technology, is a major step forward, both for broadcasters and viewers. The success of this service confirms that Bestv is at the forefront of high added value, low-cost broadcasting.”
The service, called “3VOD” by Motive, has been successfully deployed by Italian broadcaster (and client) Mediaset in Italy, demonstrating the versatility and utility of the Bestv software for DTT broadcasters.
“We are very happy to introduce 3D over terrestrial network so early on” says Eugenio Pettazzi, Head of the Premium On Demand Project at Mediaset. “The launch of this service confirms that true value added television is possible on the terrestrial platform and confirms Mediaset’s lead in introducing ongoing innovation in TV viewing”.
So far, 3D broadcasting has only been available in high-bandwidth pay-tv on satellite and cable platforms. Now, using Bestv, terrestrial broadcasters can make the jump to value-added premium services at a fraction of the normal cost.
Mediaset, Italy’s biggest commercial broadcaster, already employs Bestv software in its Premium On Demand service, launched nationally in Italy at the end of 2009.
